My roommates are exemplars of passive Russian software pirating. I’ve seen them install programs that cost hundreds of dollars to use once and toss. They ask their friends for copies of programs in different languages, or updates versions regularly. Their hard drives are awash with tens of gigabytes in programs and cracks (and viruses). I wonder how they do it all with limited bandwidth internet, it must be expensive just to download the expensive programs.
One of these (illegal) programs saved my hard drive and restored it to a readable state. I am at this very moment copying everything vital back onto my computer before formatting and returning it to the store for a replacement. Russian customer service is terrible, but if you ‘know somebody’ the service can be great.

I recently brought an external hard drive to backup all my information. I made a grave mistake and moved files there instead of copying them.
Today, my hard drive was pulled out while writing, and now won’t even be recognized as a USB device. I’m not sure what I can do, I don’t know if the information is salvageable. My garuntee in Russia is probably good for a free replacement, but my data is still gone and I have no back ups this time.
any ideas how I can get it back?

Krasnodar was excellent and I’ve got lots of stories I need to post about, not just Krasnodar, I’ve had a backlog for a while now. I think I’ll be set for almost daily this month for the rest of it. Until then I’m turning in early and leaving you with a beautiful picture of main street in spring in the south of Russia.
This is a central square in Krasnodar across from the main regional administration building and next to one of the major thoroughfares Beautiful or Red Street (Красная улица).

Our genius Russian staff has decided that, instead of changing our internet plan, to ask our provider to disconnect us when we reach our limit. I’ve got plenty more to say about this, but it’ll have to wait until next month, because our limit will cause us to be disconnected within the hour.
I’m also going to Krasnodar again on Sunday, so no posts until I get back on the 9th.
